Computer Science for Professionals, MS

Program Description

The MS CS for Professionals program (ComPro) is designed to facilitate students’ entry into industry positions by allowing up to half the credits to be taken by distance education while working in an industry position. The ComPro curriculum shares the same industry relevant courses as the on-campus MS CS program with an additional 8 credits for Curriculum Practical Training (CPT) Practicum courses completed as part of the student’s work in a computer science industry position.

Entrance Requirements

The entrance requirements for the MS in Computer Science for Professionals are the same as for the MS in Computer Science. In addition, students must have a minimum of two years of recent and consecutively paid professional programming experience.

Satisfactory Academic Progress Requirements

Students must achieve a CGPA of 3.00 or higher in all computer science courses.

Graduation Requirements

To graduate with an MS in Computer Science for Professionals, students must successfully complete 44 credits of coursework which includes: 

  • 4 credits for the Science and Technology of Consciousness course which is mandatory for all MIU Computer Science graduate students. (A Forest Academy course may replace part of the STC course when enrolled in CS courses for 12 weeks or more in that semester.) 
  • 40 credits for Computer Science courses, including:
  1. CS 401 Modern Programming Practices o CS 435 Algorithms (must be completed with a minimum grade of B- or higher)
  2. At least one Systems or Analysis course (Big Data, Big Data Analytics, Big Data Technology, Cloud Computing, Database Management Systems, Parallel Programming, or Mobile Device Programming)
  3. At least 16 credits of the CS courses applied to the MS degree must be at the 500-level or above.
  4. No more than one course can have a grade of C, C+ or C-.
  5. The cumulative GPA (Grade Point Average) for Computer Science courses must be 3.0 or higher.

  • Any CS courses 400-to-500-Level or above (Choose 20 credits) | Credits: variable

*At least 16 credits completed for the MS CS for Professionals must be in courses that are 500-level or above.

*Completing CS 522, CS 523, or CS 516 for the Systems or Analysis course will also count toward the 500-level or above requirement.
