Program Description

Ayurveda is the world’s oldest and most complete system of natural health care. The Master of Science in Maharishi AyurVeda and Integrative Medicine program offers graduate training in anatomy, physiology, pathology, assessment, the management and prevention of health disorders, and promotion of ideal health from the perspective of Maharishi AyurVeda, the modern, scientific revival of complete Ayurveda that includes balancing consciousness, the deepest value of mind and the basis of balancing the body. Maharishi AyurVeda incorporates all aspects of mind, body, behavior, and environment in a scientific framework.

The MS in Maharishi AyurVeda and Integrative Medicine program offers online courses, weekly live-streamed webinars, and six weeks of full-time clinical practicums that can be completed online or in-residence at the Maharishi AyurVeda Integrative Wellness Center at MIU’s campus in Fairfield, Iowa.

A student enrolled part-time can complete the program in three years or less.

Optional Advanced Clinical Training Track

Students may opt to extend the 3-year part-time MAVIM program for an additional semester of in-person clinical training.

Program Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the MS in Maharishi Ayurveda and Integrative Medicine, the student will be able to:

  1. Apply principles and practices of Maharishi AyurVeda in one’s own life to enhance health, happiness, and growth to higher states of consciousness. (Health)
  2. Analyze individual cases, determine imbalances and causative factors, then apply modalities and protocols of Maharishi AyurVeda for common imbalances of all the 8 organ systems. (Problem Solving) Specifically:
  3. Accurately assess level of balance and imbalance from the pulse and observation.
  4. Assess specific causative factors from health history.
  5. Determine pathology from all of the above (a & b).
  6. Recommend appropriate lifestyle, dietary, behavioral, herbal, and other modalities to restore balance.
  7. Present Maharishi AyurVeda coherently and professionally, in speaking and writing, to diverse audiences. (Communication)
  8. Conduct oneself ethically, responsibly, and professionally. (Local & Global Citizenship)
  9. Apply Maharishi AyurVeda assessment, coaching and health recommendations in a professional setting (Holistic Thinking).

Entrance Requirements

To be admitted to the online MS in Maharishi AyurVeda and Integrative Medicine program, applicants must either be licensed health professionals or have education, training, and experience in a health-related field. The admissions committee will use discretion in accepting applicants according to the following criteria.

Applicants must:

  • Hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university earned with a 3.0 CGPA (B or higher).
  • Be fluent in English (see “International Student Admissions” in “Admissions” portion of catalog).
  • Have two recommendations from professors or colleagues.
  • Provide professional education transcripts or verification of degrees.
  • Learn the Transcendental Meditation technique prior to beginning the program

Previous education, training, and experience in a health or healthcare-related field is preferred. Because the master’s degree is a Consciousness-Based education program, accepted students are required to learn the Transcendental Meditation technique before beginning the MS program or at the beginning of the first semester as part of the program.

Course Waivers for Prior Learning

Applicants who are graduates of MIU’s BA in AyurVeda Wellness and Integrative Health, Ayurveda Wellness Consultant track or Ayurveda Wellness Consultant Practicum Intensive track with an average grade of B or higher may waive the first two 8-credit Basic Principles of Maharishi AyurVeda courses, allowing them to enter the 2nd year of program coursework.

Graduation Requirements

To graduate with an MS in Maharishi AyurVeda and Integrative Medicine, students must successfully complete 51 credits of study, the three-part Exploring Consciousness course, and 48 credits of required MAVIM courses.

Students must also successfully complete an examination for each course with a grade/performance of 70% or more.

Clinical experience over the course of the program must include at least 150 in-person client or patient encounters including observing consultations, participating in small group patient-oriented discussions, and conducting one-on-one consultations. Prior to graduation, students must pass the final clinical cases and examination.
