Program Description

For students who want to create a foundation for a career in the arts, the art faculty highly recommend the Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA), a professional art degree program. In their final spring semester, BFA students do independent studio work in painting and drawing, ceramics, or sculpture.

Entrance Requirements

Students who are currently enrolled in a BA Art program who are interested in the BFA program should apply for admission to the program in the middle of the junior year or the beginning of the senior year and submit a portfolio of previous course work. Admission to the BFA Art, Consciousness, and Creative Practice program is based on the application proposal, portfolio, and a GPA of 3.0 in prior art courses. Applications are available from the Art Department administrator. Continued participation in the program requires a 3.0 GPA or higher in art courses.

BFA Art Program Learning Outcomes

Upon successfully completing the BFA in Art, Consciousness, and Creative Practice, students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate alertness, receptivity, and engagement
  2. Create works for art that demonstrate self-reliance and resourcefulness in integrating materials, process, effective technique, form, and content.
  3. Develop ideas with a distinct point of view (perception of the world.)
  4. Effectively apply the formal language of art to communicate visually.
  5. Create a cohesive body of artwork, sufficient to sustain a studio practice and/or to apply for graduate study.
  6. Research and write effectively about art, using relevant artworks as sources of inspiration, articulating how they relate to aesthetic values, the cultural context, and to consciousness.
  7. Write and speak clearly and authentically about their own art and practice.
