This course focuses on the selection and understanding of plants for sustainable landscapes, with an emphasis on ecological compatibility, climate adaptation, and aesthetic value. Students will learn about plant species that thrive in local conditions, promote biodiversity, and require minimal resources such as water and fertilizer. Key topics will include the benefits of native plants, drought-tolerant species, and low-maintenance options, as well as how to select plants based on their environmental roles in supporting soil health and pollinator populations. Students will explore the art and science of creating balanced, year-round gardens by mastering perennial plant combinations through visual presentations, assigned readings, projects, and classroom discussion.
