This course will equip students with the knowledge and skills to produce high-quality field recordings and provide an opportunity to consider listening with renewed humility. Through field recording exercises, focused listening practices, and audio editing and manipulation techniques, we will open ourselves up to the world of sound. Everything sonic is fair game for a field recording: natural sounds, like the hypnotic drone of cicadas on a summer evening; or human-made, such as the haunting sound of a creaking door. These materials can then be used in a wide variety of contexts: filmmaking, podcasting, music, sound art, or simply the joy of listening.
